PRESENT AND PAST PROJECTS

RTE CC3 2FM

RTE

For the past 20 years, Audiohead Ltd has carried out over 30 studio installations for RTE radio (Radio 1, 2FM, RnaG, Lyric) in Ireland. In 2004, RTE selected the Studer On Air 3000 as their console of choice. Since then, Audiohead Ltd have been installing and providing technical support for these consoles. Recently we have completed the installation of RTE's new visual radio studios based around the Calrec Type R console. With 8 PTZ cameras in each studio, along with a video wall, these studios are cutting edge.

TODAY FM

Marconi House

In 2007 Audiohead Limited was selected as the installer for the Marconi House studio complex on Digges Lane in Dublin. This currently is home to Today FM, Newstalk and Spin103.8. It was the largest studio installation in Ireland since the Radio Centre in RTE was built in 1973. It is comprised of 14 studios and a large comms room (CTA). We put together a crew of installers and entered site with the plaster still wet on the walls for a 14 week project timeframe. 14 weeks later the building was On Air and ready to go!

TRIDENT TSM

Trident TSM

Audiohead had the privilege to be involved in this studio install. At the centre of this wonderful studio is the Trident TSM console. We had some late evenings figuring out the signal flow of this console on which everything is called 'monitor'. This console has an interesting history coming from Chipping Norton studios in the UK. Hits recorded on the console include:

"In The Army Now" by Status Quo"Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo"I Should Have Known Better" by Jim Diamond"Promise Me" by Beverley Craven "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by the Proclaimers"Perfect" by Fairground Attraction "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" by Cutting Crew"Eighteen With A Bullet" by Pete Wingfield "Hocus Pocus" by Focus "Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)" by the Bay City RollersDuran Duran recorded part of their debut album Duran Duran (1981)Radiohead recorded their 1993 debut album, Pablo HoneyAnd a special mention for The Forget Me Nots who recorded their album Hullabaloo
Connemara community radio studio

Connemara Community Radio

Community radio has a special role to play in Irish radio. We have worked with many community and college radio studios over the years. Recently we converted Connemara Community Radio's station to AOIP, supplying, installing and configuring their new Wheatstone system without any disruption to their program output. The question was asked by the station how they could not only change transmission between studios but also send a playout PC directly to air, freeing up both studios for pre-records. The answer: Wheatsone's API and a Raspberry Pi. We fitted a small touchscreen Raspberry Pi in studio 1 (see pic) that gives full control of what goes to air. The interface is protected by a 4 digit pin access, so only selected personnel can make changes.

Oireachtas TV

Audiohead was subcontracted by Libirel Communications to work on the TX Playout system upgrade. The scope of work consisted of racking/cabling of servers, switches, vision mixers, DA frames and connecting new equipment to the existing infrastructure. All work was carried out to the highest standards expected in a national broadcaster's environment.

Calrec Brio

Oireachtas TV Control Room

In 2019 Audiohead and Libirel Communications teamed up to carry out the complete refit the main control room in Oireachtas TV. We supplied and installed all of the control room equipment and associated rack room end. One of the requirements from the customer was to have a separate audio control room/booth (the audio mixer had been in the control room previously). We supplied a custom designed booth from IAC in the UK. The mixer chosen was the Calrec Brio, along with the Hydra crate to present all of the audio IO in the rack room for easy connection with existing services.

Wheatstone IP12

Paddy Power

For many many years Audiohead have been looking after Paddy Power's studio requirements. In 2018 the decision was made to transition the broadcast studios to AOIP. After careful consideration and evaluation process, Wheatstone was console of choice for this project. 3 x IP12's with expanded CB32's were installed in the studios and 2 x IP88's and 1 x Aura8IP in the comms room.

Wheatstone Axia
transmission switcher

RTE Radio 1 transmission switcher

Audiohead limited was contracted to install this system by both of the companies that won the open tender process to supply the new transmission switcher to RTE. It consists of 2 isolated systems (Wheatstone & Axia) for redundancy. Both systems preform the same operations and can be switched between each other seamlessly.

Our role was to integrate the system into the existing infrastructure which involved running new outputs from each studio, along with GPIO contacts for RTE's key switch system, back to the new transmission system. Needless to say, this meant a lot of work on transmission critical points for a national broadcaster, pressure galore but glad to say not a millisecond of airtime lost.
